The original posting was from Michael Covington, (who is very active on the 
astro-photo mailing list).  Michael's experience with tech pan would include
film that has been hyper-sensitzed by baking in forming gas.  (Tech pan not
treated this way is almost useless for astro-photography).

Once "hypered" tech pan can be somewhat brittle.  Another problem is because
 it is so dry (part of the hypering process is to force water out of the film
emulsion), it becomes very vulnerable to static electricity.  I've had this
happen to me with hypered tech pan and plastic reels.  As a result, many 
astro-photogrpahers (not all) perfer SS over plastic when developing 
hypered tech pan.
