Yes, I pull process HIE all the time with HC-110.  Additionally, I have
found that D-76 softens the edges of the silver grains, giving the illusion
of finer grain, but in fact giving less sharpness. I don't use it for that
reason. I prefer HC-110 because it gives better sharpness / acutance and I
have made enlargements to 28x42 inches, from a full frame 35mm HIE neg.
The grain is tack sharp and probably would remain that way at even larger
sizes.  The point is that sharp grain is the secret, not the  elimination
of grain.  That is not possible when you are at mural size. Check out
Ilford XP2 film.  It is very fine grain, but if you blow it up very large,
it looses its apparent sharpness and appears blurry because of the dye
layers not having sharp grain as in regular films.  I will admit that at
8x10 sizes, maybe D-76 looks smoother than HC-110 if that is your goal.  I
happen to like the grain effect and it remains part of the charm of the
film at any magnitude.
