Sony Mavica works with Wratten 87

Toying around with what's left of the scratched Lee polyester 87
gel I cut up for my flash head, I thought to stick it over the
lens of the Sony Mavica digital camera my father bought
yesterday.
The Mavica has a number of options, including taking monochrome
pictures. I took a small potted plant and put it under a
halogen lamp, set the camera on monochrome, slipped the filter
over the lens, and suddenly the leaves turned that familiar
white -- the Mavica can indeed take pictures through a visually
opaque no.87 filter! Not only that, but after hunting a little
the auto-focus appears to have worked almost perfectly -- the
hunting around it did may have been because I was holding the
flimsy filter over the lens with my fingers and it was bending a
little.
The light from a single 75W halogen bulb 6 feet away is a bit
dim, so the picture is pretty dark, but it works. If I'd thought
of this earlier in the day I would have tried it outdoors, but
that will have to wait for the weekend.
This might just be enough to get me to buy a digital camera of my
own, though probably something with a bit better resolution than
the Mavica. Has anyone tried this with other digital cameras?
It seems like a very convenient way of pre-visualizing an IR shot
in the field. Certainly better than the IR night vision goggles
I tried in the past.
