New Bio
Hello All, I just joined the list and was asked to submit my bio so
here it is!
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
- Name: Marc Turner
- Profession/Study: Instrumentation Engineer weekdays, Intrepid
Wedding/Portrait photographer evenings and weekends
- Country: USA
- Personal history of photography:
My life in photography began when I was 11 and a friend of mine let
me take some pictures with his 110 pocket camera during a school
outing. I never saw the pictures, but knowing that those little
"clicks" were capturing the scenes was exhilarating. I later got one
of my own but due to poverty wasn't able to shoot a lot. I did learn
though that my favorite subjects were people - the shots of "scenery"
were generally those that never got pulled out of the envelope again
after the first shuffle through.
I attended Caltech and was introduced by a friend there to the
publications darkroom and did my first prints. It was just like
Christmas everytime I watched an image come up in the Dektol. I
became the Publications Darkroom Chairman so I could have unlimited
access, and also Photo Editor of the student paper so I could get
unlimited film. That was the life! Currently I am living with a
"walk-in-closet converted to darkroom" which generates dust faster
than a power-sander. Someday I'm going to build one right . . .
My first real camera was an OM-4 purchased in 1986. I loved the
10-stop spotmeter scale on the bottom that let you meter different
parts of the scene and compare their relative illuminance. I still
regret selling that camera . . ., it was very rugged and light and the
controls were quick and easy to use. My eyes aren't terribly sharp
though and enough of my photos were slightly off that I decided to try
autofocus, switching to Nikon F90. Biggest complaint is that I still
have to look at the top deck to find some of the controls. Two years
ago I also invested in a Mamiya RZ67 Pro II for the wedding and
portrait work. Next purchase I'm saving for is a 65mm wide angle for
this camera.
Most of my present photography still amounts to "family" work since
I do a lot of portraiture, weddings, and family events.
- Preferred subjects: People, all sorts
- Materials (film, filters, paper, chemistry):
Films: Fuji NPS, Kodak Pro 400 MC, Tri-X, TMAX-100 & 3200, HIE
Paper: Agfa Portriga Rapid, Kodak Fine Art Elite
Chemistry: TMax or XTOL for film, Dektol or Selectol-Soft for
paper. Use distilled water for final paper and film rinse - you'll
never have spots (forget PhotoFlo!)
- Format (35mm/medium format/large format): 35mm, 6x7, and some
various pinhole and antique-format sizes
- Other strange hobbies: I'm building a radio-controlled parasail
glider to loft my camera for an attempt at aerial photography - hope
my F90 survives. I also SCUBA dive when the opportunity presents.
- How did you find out about this list: It was mentioned on the
Pinhole list
- IR Gallery on the web: Don't have one set up yet, although I've got
a few nice prints that I'd like to show.
- Expand on anything photographic you like:
I love the effects possible with Kodak HS infrared, but the grain
generally present with the 35mm format often bothers me. I don't have
a 4x5 camera and my biggest gripe with Kodak is that they don't offer
this film in a 120/220 format. Sure, I can do 4x5 pinhole but my
subjects generally can't hold still 15 minutes.
