There may be less vegetation in winter, but IR does more than
turn the leaves white anyway, and winter can be a good time to
play with those other effects.
Locally, we're blessed with continuous landscapes from the
crests of the Olympic and Cascade mountan ranges down to the
waters of Puget Sound. The snow and clouds still turn bright
white, the sky and waters still turn black, and IR brings out
the contrast between evergreen and deciduous forests. On
distant shots of the forested foothills, the fine lines of
new-growth trees on roads cut through the Douglas Fir stand out
in a way they don't when everything is in full bloom. The
pictures aren't quite as other-worldly as IR shots of deciduous
forests in summer, but IR definitely has its place this time of
year around here.
Personally, I'm eagerly awaiting what's usually a long, boring
drive across the state to Pullman this weekend, hoping for some
good shots of early spring on the Palouse. The refrigerator in
my van is already loaded with a dozen rolls of film, and my
camping gear has been displaced by a tripod, four cameras,
changing bag, etc. Hope I can remember all the old weathered
barns, withered dead trees, etc. that I noted the last time I
made the trip. So far the forecast looks good, warm and sunny
with partial clouds.
