As far as film preference is concerned, I guess you pays your money and
takes your choice. For me, in the UK, Ilford B&W film has always been
easier to obtain than Kodak - hence I have concentrated on it. I played
with FP4 and HP5 for many years, and found them easy to use - FP4 was my
standard film, but I always found it rather grainy for its speed.
When Delta came out, I switched over to it exclusively. Having worked
with FP4, Delta 100 came as a complete shock: only 1/3 of a stop slower,
but the grain is barely noticeable on a 12x16 enlargement. I found it
rather more contrasty and a lot sharper than FP4 (developed in LC-29)
which suited my diffuser enlarger. I also use Delta 400 a lot - often
pushing it to 1600 - with excellent results. The grain is definitely
more noticeable than with Delta 100, but certainly no worse than good
old FP4.
I can't comment on Pan-F since I've never used it, and SFX-200 strikes
me as an "inbetween" film - if I want an IR effect, I use HIE! All I
can say about Delta is: try it - you'll be impressed.
