Greetings, all! I am new to this list and as suggested, here is a bio. Not
too long, I hope...
My name is Beth Carruthers and I am an artist currently living on one of
the beautiful Gulf Islands off the west coast of Canada. Since about 1991,
the bulk of my photographic work has been with IR - usually Kodak B/W 35
mm. I usually work with a Contax system - 2 bodies with a selection of
Zeiss lenses. I like to be light and mobile. D-76 used to be my developer
of choice, but I'm working with Rodinal these past days. My work tends to
be figurative and figure/landscape and is usually location specific. I have
a strong background in painting and drawing and this influences my work in
terms of composition and a love of visual layering and texture. I do little
commercial work. I have spent a lot of time working with alternative
printing processes such as Kallitype and Cyanotype. I like to print onto
fabric for it's movement and tactility and I often create photo-based mixed
media works. When I print on more traditional photographic media, I prefer
heavy, warm toned fibre based papers with a matte surface. These are
becoming increasingly difficult to locate here on the West coast of Canada.
I often find myself ordering them from afar. I suspect that I would love
pinhole cameras, and plan to construct one whenever I have some time again
in my life. For the past 7 years I have shared a darkroom in Vancouver with
4 others, 2 of whom use IR. I have a fine arts studio in my home on
Gabriola Island and am interested in overprinting monoprints, via a hand
cranked press, onto existing photo images printed on rag paper. We'll see
what happens.
My other favorite things include gardening, horses, fine cooking, writing,
travel and of course, politics, truth and beauty. I love big cities (miss
Paris, London, Prague...), love the ocean, the desert and the wild things.

My website is now down and will be until I find time to do something about it.

Here is the text of my usual bio for exhibition:

Beth Carruthers
is an internationally exhibited artist, skilled in visual arts & design -
from traditional fine arts through photography and digital media. A
graduate of the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design, she also studied at
the University of British Columbia, was a scholarship student in France and
studied Interactive Technologies and New Media at Simon Fraser University
and at the Institute for Communications Arts. For many years Beth has
worked with audio artists on the concept & visual/design elements of their
C.D. projects. Her experience includes teaching workshops at an artist run
centre in London, England and work on the programming and organising
committee of the Vancouver Electronic Arts Festival. She is also a
coordinator for the festival. Beth was President of the Vancouver
Association for Photographic Arts, as well as Director of Exposure Gallery
& Artist-run Centre. Currently, Beth is engaged with a Community
Environmental Arts Project,"SongBird", which takes place in Vancouver,
Canada. Beginning in Spring '98 and continuing through Spring '99, SongBird
includes workshops, exhibitions, performance, storytelling and a forum on
habitat status and arts & environment. SongBird seeks to encourage active
community involvement in issues of urban habitat & species loss and the
proposing of solutions. Beth has worked with environmental and womens
groups, and continues to be engaged with issues of sustainable community
and animal rights.

Thanks for reading!
