CTX-5000 X-Ray Machine

Did a search of Yahoo, and found this page with links to several other
articles: cns-web.bu.edu/~bshock/film.html

One of the links was to an article by Herb Kepler, which said in part:

"But after various committees formed by the major
film manufacturers made preliminary tests of the
CTX 5000, they found it to be "catastrophic," even
to ISO 100 film. However, due to the machine's
effectiveness in detecting bomb material, the FAA
was able to get funding last year to deploy 50
Invision CTX 5000 units at all major US airports.
Plans to purchase more are under way and foreign
airport security officials are also buying units.
Installation dates? We don't know.

Why is the CTX 5000 so dangerous to film?
Because it's said to be a two-stage detection
apparatus. As presently planned, the unit, located
somewhere between the check-in counter and the
plane, would use a normal X-ray tube scan for all
ticketed luggage. When suspicious material is
found, the luggage would be zapped by a second
high-scan X-ray tube.

>From what I've been able to discern, the normal
scan doesn't appear to cause film fogging (although
all checks haven't yet been make of this either). But,
the second tube high scan is apparently
disastrous on film, and there are additional
worries about scattered radiation from the high
scan causing further damage of film, even if the
spot zapped is located at some distance from the
immediate vicinity of the high-scan point."
