Clive,
Since you are driving up to Utah I sure hope you are planning to stop
awhile at Bryce Canyon, in Utah near the Nevada boarder. One of the
most scenic geological places in the country. My Aunt and Uncle
(Carol and Jerry Pollock) work in the main restaurant/inn in that area
("Ruby's") which is kind of a lodge. The view from some of the
outlooks by moonlight is incredible and I'm sure they'd be glad to
tell you where to go. The people are definitely friendly. Never
tried IR film there but there should be some good possibilities.
Seems like chrome would be a good choice to get nice saturated colors
from the red rock formations and blue skies.
Actually, there's another nice scenic area before you get to the Utah
border, about an hour out of Las Vegas. It's called something like
the "Valley of Fire". If you see the signs for it you might want to
check it out. Lots of red cliffs with interesting contours and
shadows when the sun shines across them. Friendly chipmunks (see a
photo of my wife sharing a cracker with one at:

No facilities are available there except probably campgrounds.
I don't know how far up into Utah you are going, but somewhere around
Nephi (about 1/3 of the way up) is an area covered by sand dunes if
you are interested in those kind of pictures! Should be on the map as
I believe it is a national monument or national park. Camping is
available or you could stay at an inn at a town nearby. Hotels in
rural Utah are very inexpensive and friendly.
