For years I have always handchecked my film, both color slide and HIE, in
clear ziplock bags.  I have never had more than a quick check by airline
personnel and then was waved on through.  I just returned from a trip to
Arizona, however, and the Phoenix airport personnel actually opened up the
ziplock, checked any film boxes that were still sealed and attempted to open
my HIE cartridges. I have made it a habit to keep the film insert
documentation in the ziplock just in case I needed it. I quickly explained
that they could not be exposed to light and they settled for shaking each of
the cartridges to determine that there really was a roll of film inside. It
was the closest I have come to having my HIE exposed by airport personnel.  I
am a midwestern, middleaged female - not likely to be viewed as a suspicious
character, so I can only assume that some airports have tightened security in
this area.
