To keep from "looking stupid" you will want to do a bit of reading and a bit of
testing.  My Web site, as well as others here, would be a good place to start. 
I've got the IR FAQ, as well as other good information.  You will certainly want
to do a good bit of testing with an unfamiliar film film to find the results you
are seeking.
