I agree. In fact, the processing times for most 1:1 or 1:2 dilutions of
xtol seem a minute or two shy if you shot at rated ASA/ISO> I find if you
shoot say a 400 speed film at 200 (less one stop) then the tiems for Xtol
work fine.
Another thing I find with Xtol more than some other developers is minimum
quanties needed. For example, lets say you are developing 8 sheets of HSI
in a Jobo tank. You water down your Xtol to a 1:1 dilution, then make sure
you use the full, reccomended 600ml of solution. I found on other B&W
films that at a 1:2 dilutions, sometimes you need either more soultion or
less sheets of film. No matter what yur final diution, you seem to need a
minimum amount of stock solution per film to start with. Don't know why,
and cannot say what teh exact amount is per film & format, but just keep
your eyes open for it.
