Re: XTOL very good results.
Karin,
Pardon me for jumping in, and, I am not making a making a personal attack,
but I think the premise of your remark ----
> to do what should have been done by the manufacturer in their controlled
labs.
is invalid.
Any black and white developer requires that a photographer to derive his or
her own optimum development times and dilutions for any black and white
film/developer combination.
Most of the time this starts with the recommendation set forth by the
film/developer manufacture. I don't use Xtol for HIE, only for TMZ and soon
for TMY. The results I get with TMZ are excellent and only required a few
test rolls to hit my aim point. I would have never done any serious work
until I had done testing to perfect my process. Xtol is in my opinion one of
the best commercial black and white developers released in the last 10 years
by Kodak, maybe longer. It is on a par with D-76 and HC 110 for versatile
and has a much, much longer shelf life than those before it.
I think you should stick with the Xtol and not deny yourself the benefit of
this developer. If you take careful notes on exposure and development I'll
bet you can perfect your development after only 3 - 5 rolls of film. I
realize in the case of HIE this is not an inexpensive test, but in the long
run it will be cheaper due to less wasted of developer and I think you will
find your grain structure a little tighter.
Good luck,
Don
