Hi all,
Increased density from the sprocket holes "down/up" into the image area
were a source of frustartion in the early 80's when Kodak introduced its'
Tech pan 35 mm film. Kodak indicated that it was "tumbling agitation"that
was the cause... increased "development" caused by increased turbulence in
the developer as it passed through the sprocket holes. At that point I had
changed to "spaghetti" development to eliminate the problem I was
experiencing. Kodak then indicated a change in agitation technique to
"rapid vertical movement of the tank".
I would still be tempted to suggest that this increased density (in from
the sprocket holes on the negative is indeed the result of over-generous
agitation. Some students of mine have had the same problem and on a
suggestion to process their HIE in plastic tanks with gentle "rotary"
agitation elimiated the problem they seemed to be experiencing.
