Re: Infrared Flashes

Hi Everybody -- Most Flash units (maybe all flash units) have a high infrared
output
that is quite useful for infrared photography. An 87C filter can be placed on
an flash
unit to make "unobtrusive" flash photograhs with HIE film. I have played
around with
this a bit and I can tell you that it is difficult to seal all the light leaks
around a flash unit
so that nothing but infrared light is emitted.
But flash units work well with infrared film and I often use unfiltered flash
for infrared
macro photography. I've photographed hummingbirds with HIE film (not very
interesting)
and insects. There is a butterfly in the infrared section of my web pages
that was taken
with a "Cat" lens -- I also used fresnel lens projected flash for that picture
(http://pw2.netcom.com/~flzhgn/ir.htm)
Infrared flash would be useful for photographing bats and other crepuscular
animals, I would think but I haven't gotten around to it, yet.
