Bill:

Would you expect to have to change your brightness and contrast settings for
each of the Television stations you receive? To suggest that the user have
to make changes of their settings to view YOUR pictures is a cop-out and it
simply won't happen (sorry to be a naysayer but it's true). There are
"standards" for web publishing but they aren't published and no one requires
you to stick to them...it's entirely voluntary.

If you are using photoshop you can use the gamma control panel to adjust. If
you are using other image editors (I use Micrografx Picture Publisher) you
can simply do some testing or take others words for where your suggested
shadows, highlight and other key tone should be. Better yet do up a couple
of sample files and take them around to a number of friends and view them on
their systems and see what adjustments need to be made.

The latter is what I did. It took me about three weeks of tweaking in the
evenings going back and forth (I was also trying to find an optimal crunch
factor for JPEG as well.

Hope that helps...don't give up quite yet.
