Tom,
One posssible solution that you might want to consider...
I had a friend who spent a great deal of time photographing prairie farms
from light aircraft. He once complained that his some of his images were
suffering similar problems. He was pleasantly surprised that his problems
disappeared when he replaced his soft/folding lens shade with a firm metal
one. Apparently, the increased force of "slipstream" from the open window
(or removed door) was partially "collapsing/vibrating" the soft lens shield
into the field of view, causing under- exposure on one end of the
negative... He swore that he never saw this in the viewfinder, but
subsequent tests proved the problem.
