The rest of the story:
I now know why the list was essentially silent concerning the plus density
thin lines every eight frames that I was seeing. To make a long story very
short, I sent evidence to Kodak a month ago that it was nothing in my
cameras or processing that did it. A couple of days ago, they told me that
a total of three photographers (including me) had seen this problem. (I
guess the other two are not on the list!.) Kodak has narrowed the search
to a few transport reels in their manufacturing process where this scuffing
was probably occurring. They explained that pressure would have
desensitized HIE to give negative density artifacts, and that ploughing the
emulsion would sensitize it (in fact actually tantamount to a mechanical
exposure of the grains rather than electrical ) and give a positive density
artifact as in my case.
Kokak is doing right by me as far as my own bad bricks are concerned. So
the mystery is solved and maybe the problem is resolved. But, if anyone on
the list is experiencing the exact same problem, you can contact me off
list and I'll put you in touch with those in the know at the Kodak plant.
