It was not real infrared instead just microwave radiation hence was
labelled a MASER, though the possibility of LASER was predicted
theoretically well before that. Indeed first true LASER was ruby. The
spectral emission was in 'red'.

IR too is visible to some reptiles, specially vipers (hump-nosed-viper
and green-pit-viper for example).
Surely IR and UV are not in 'visual' range of spectrum. Does that mean
'light' is a bit fussy term?
