Isn't IR LED an oxymoron?

I used to have some infra red lasers that emmited a very narrow band at 820nmand 830
nm and 20mw. They were definitely visible to me.
BTW, such devices can be dangerous, because the eye is very insensitive at such
wavelengths.
I do not think it is worth quibbling about whether an IR LED is an oxymoron or not.
As far as this group is concerned, the principles and practice of infra red
photography
is similar enough to photography using visible light.
