I have not heard of this kind of defect before. If you are seeing it on
fresh film rather frequently, then I would let Kodak know about it.
Negative density lines on the negs can result from scratches of course
after processing, but Kodak says they can also be due to pressure without
really gouging the emulsion. The latter case could be a manufacturing
problem if your camera does not do it to other HIE rolls. Kodak does not
announce such problems usually or even tell you for sure when you call that
they have heard of it before. But once I tested my problem in a way that
proved it was a film problem and sent them test negs and unexposed rolls,
they were very cooperative.
Today I received a shipment of replacement film from Rochester and will
test some of it shortly (this is batch # 2881, exp. 7/99)
