With Kodak HIE, from what I've heard, the metal canister is NOT lightsafe.
A possible reason I've heard for this (which sounds pretty plausible to me)
is not that the metal itself is transparent to infrared light, but that the
light-trap (or whatever it is - the flap the film comes through out of the
canister) isn't lightsafe (I don't remember if it's made out of some type
of plastic or felt or something). So you could have the film, not even in
the metal canister, but in the plastic container, and it would be safe from
light (assuming you didn't expose it to light in the process of this
hypothetical experiment - and keep in mind that it's not safe from heat
either way). But if you have the film in its metal canister outside of the
plastic container, it's not lightsafe, the roll will end up fogged.
Konica's is said to be less sensitive to loading in subdued light (while
HIE is said to require TOTAL darkness), probably because its light-trap is
better - this also means there probably isn't a problem with having the
canister outside of the plastic container.
