I generally find that the following works well...
I take several of the plastic film containers (4 or 5) and tape them end
ton end. Making several longer tubes from each brick of HIE in this
manner. I then roll each "tube" in red construction paper. Adding a
label that says "NOT TNT" to each long tube.
Next, tape several long tubes together side-by-side. It makes them into
an easier to carry bundle....
Taping an old alarm clock to the bundle usually makes it easier for me
to find my HIE in the dark. Both the luminous hands on the dial and the
ticking are substantial aids in this regard.
I usually use some scrap wire to make a quick and easy handle for the
bundle.
Just take your HIE package and place it into a box or the bottom of a
carry on bag. I sometimes label the box "H E -- do not shake, drop, or
jostle" , since I prefer two letter abbreviations... Other times I have
taped the package around my midsection (when I have no room in my
carry-ons).
If anyone asks about the package I say it's not mine. That someone just
paid me $2000 because they were travelling on to Kabul and had too many
pieces of luggage already.
Gets both my film and I special handling every time. Of course, I
usually have to build in a few days or months of extra time for my
departure, as most governments are so convinced of my "special" status
that they offer me a room and their expense and allow me an extended
stay.
On a more serious note... In case I'm not clear here. I think this issue
has been beaten to death already.
I travel extensively and the best route is to check with a colleague
wherever you are going on likely airport procedures. Realize that
temporary tightenings as a result of specific and credible threats do
happen and your colleague's info may be overridden by such happenings.
Just leave lots of time and hope for the best... Carry-on is almost
always a better choice than stowed luggage -- if you don't get
hand-checking, at least the X-Ray level is likely to be lower...
OH yeah.. AND the effects of X-Ray exposure will inherently vary
depending upon the exposure index you assign to the HIE when choosing
exposure/development times... What works for 50 ISO will not for 3200.
