I've generally been a lurker here, trying to pick up some tips on how to =
get
started in IR a bit more seriously than I have in the past. When I visit=
many
contributors' sites and see the effects I am really impressed. I don't h=
ave
my own site or even a scanner to start digitalizing any images. But mayb=
e one
of these days. In any event, here goes with the application/questionnair=
e.
Name: Carl Jordan
- Profession/Study: US Govt employee (Washington DC). Photography on t=
he
side. I do an occasional wedding, but mainly I just enjoy shooting and s=
eeing
my results.
- Country: USA (VA)
- Personal history of photography: Just a hobbyist most of my life, and=
took
some classes at the local community college the last couple of years. I =
shot
some HIE for one or two of the b+w classes, but mostly on an experimental=
basis to see what they would look like.
- Preferred subjects: Whatever works.
- Materials (film, filters, paper, chemistry): I don't do any of my own=
work, since I have no lab and no access to any since I am out of classes =
now. =
But I do plan to at least give the processing at home a try on my own, an=
d
have contact sheets made at the local professional lab. I've saved up ab=
out
half a dozen rolls of b+w film so far, and will probably just use t-max f=
or
them all, but one at a time, of course.
- Format (35mm/medium format/large format): I'd always shot 35mm, but w=
ithin
the last two years I got a Mamiya 645, and try to use that whenever I can=
=2E I
know HIE, which is the most sensitive IR film, only comes in 135. So whe=
n I
was in NYC a few weeks ago (a two-weekend workshop on the zone system at =
ICP),
I went to BIlford's SFX 200 in 120 format. Yes! it is available now. I
visited Ilford's home page, and they don't even have it on there yet. Th=
en I
went to Arlington National Cemetery yesterday and shot two of them late i=
n the
afternoon. Lots of trees and tombstones. Generally took an incident rea=
ding,
using an EI of 20 (200 - 3 1/3 stops), and bracketed 1 up and 1 down arou=
nd
the reading with a red #25 on the lens. I got hold of the IR FAQ on your=
site, and it's loaded with good info.
- How did you find out about this list: Actually, I forget where. Prob=
ably
in one or more of the rec.photo.* groups.
But I do have a question I haven't ever seen asked(doesn't mean it hasn't=
been
asked, only that I haven't seen it or an answer). A lot of photographers=
would like HIE (I assume) to be available in 120. But how would you load=
it
into a camera? Because you have to be able to see the "start here" arrow=
before closing the back. It came to me yesterday. One could certainly u=
se a
changing bag, as I've done for the 35mm HIE, but how do you know where to=
start with 120? Since you cannot expose HIE even to subdued light.
