I've loaded HIE in a very dark room - the door was closed, but after the
time it took to load the film, I realized I could see things in the room.
The film ended up not being fogged as far as I can tell, but I wouldn't
count on it, since the light in your case may have more or less infrared
light leaking in. Now I always put a towel along the bottom of the door to
keep light from leaking underneath. You can still see a line of lit area
between the door and its frame (it's the frame itself that's lit, it's not
letting any direct light in at all), and the reflection of that in the
mirror, but aside from that, there's no light that my eyes can discern -
and I load the film onto the reel (which takes considerably longer that
just loading film into the camera, and exposes all the film directly to
whatever light may be leaking in) in the same conditions, and have been
able to discern no fogging. The base is still clear, as far as I can tell.
If you can see objects or shapes in the room after you've been in it for a
few minutes, then I would say you're not playing it safe, though it might
or might not still work out.

David
