Re: MACKEY LINES

IR and Mackie lines are not intimately related. Mackie lines are associated
with what is often called solarization but which, in fact, is the Sabattier
effect.

Makie lines are produced during the generation of the Sabattier effect at
boundaries between very light and very dark areas in the original subject. In
the Sabattier version the dark areas gain density, sometimes surpassing that of
white areas, and at the boundary a black line (actually a clear line in a
negative) develops due I think to developer exhaustion.

The Sabattier effect is one of the "standard" effects that is discussed in
photographic textbooks. It joins the Herschel effect (that presumably allows
you to make IR photographs on chlorobromide papers that are NOT sensitive to
IR!!!), the Clayden effect and others.

I have done some work with exploiting the Sabattier effect with Polaroid Type
667 and 57 films. I recopy the paper negatives with Polagraph and make prints.
I call them Phoenix prints. Most people don't care. ;-) However, if you want to
see some of these applied to portraits and figure work visit my small gallery
of photographs at: http://www.rit.edu/~andpph/pictures/html

BTW, solarization is a result of gross overexposure of photographic materials.
Seldom seen in practice but achievable by including the sun in a photograph.
This sometimes shows up as a "blacK" sun in B&W prints.
