Hello Samuel,

<<<You wrote: I am planning to bid for a Hasselblad 70 mm back on ebay
in order to take HIE in medium camera. Do I also need canisters?
Should we load it into canister in advance?
Could any body explain to me how to load HIE in 70 mm back? Also, I
need information of where (price?) to buy HIE bulk rolls. Please note
my location is in Taiwan>>>

Yes you will need two 70mm canisters. They are similar to 35mm
canisters, the main difference is they are bigger, and more expensive.
One canister intially holds the film and the other canister accepts
the film as you expose your film and wind it up.

You should load the canister in advance. You could do this in the
field with a changing bag. But I think a little pre-preparation would
make it easier.

I have a book that shows you how to load 70mm film in a Hassy back.
Contact me personally. I might be able to photocopy the pertenant
information and send it to you.

Buying this film and getting it back home to Japan will be your
biggest problem. Current USA prices are $178 (B&H's price) to about
$220 (Calumet's price). Any Kodak dealer can special order this film
for you, but I'm not sure it is available to foreign countries. I
thought I read on this list several months ago that the USA did not
allow this film to be exported because it could be used for military
purposes? I bet you could order it internationally through B&H and no
one would care. Don't blame me if police officers come knocking on
your door though!

There are four mail order firms that I have used that are
knowledgeable about gettng this film.
1. B&H in New York City, New York
2. Calumet Photographic, in Chicago, Illinoise
3. Unique Photo in New Jersey
4. Digital Link, in Atlanta, Georgia

Of these four, only Unique Photo and Digital Link usually have this
film in stock. B&H and Calumet have to special order it and this
takes about 6 weeks. My advice would to try to order it by mail
through B&H first. Check and make sure that B&H's shippers won't
subject the film to the newer x-ray scanners (popping up in several
airports) capable of fogging film. IF they won't ship it to Japan,
my advice would be to pre order it and pre pay for this film and get a
few rolls while you are in the States . All of the above merchants
have web sites. And Kodak's web site can tell you the Catalog number
of this film. The catalog number is 169 0841,( or maybe it's 2424 2921
1611? I can't tell by looking at the label on the cannister). B&H's
order number for this film is KOIA70150. If you don't have the cat.
# the above merchants will be clueless as to what you are talking
about. And just so you know the technical name for this film is "
Kodak #2424 Infrared Aerographic Film 70mm x 150 feet"

The other concern you have is transporting it back to Japan. You must
put this film in your check on luggage. Otherwise the new scanners
could destroy the film. IF the security officers at the gate are
persistent a changing bag will be necessary so they can check the film
by touch in total darkness.

Good luck
Rolland Elliott
P.S. If you think this is too much trouble, let me reassure you that
big negatives and HIE are an awesome combination!
