Re: IR HAZARDS

the bit about the f stop is wrong. sorry guys. not based in fact.

heat from your hands has nothing to do with IR. oil and fingerprints are the usual problems with
developing film but there are no more problems with developing this than other B&W or color
film. just load the film in the dark like you do any other emulsion, handle it by the edges, its
fine.

there's IR and there's IR. the IR thats heat sensitive is thermography and is recorded by cooled
electronics, not film. you can photograph the pixel image, but that's something that can be done with any film as its just an electronic screen.

HIE picks up near IR. not the heat sensitive part. any invisible heat it picks up will be enough to burn you. like the famous hot iron picture that Kodak had in its IR book.

depending on your technique, you'll be able to use a regular meter with how you develop film. for me I rate it at an EI of 400. works for me in my camera. your experience may differ. everything except the opaque filters are done through the lens. works for me. I prefer buying bulk film. except for color. 33 rolls at a time is a bit much. unless Kodak dropped the minimum requirement.

later.

Brian,

I seemed to have trashed that message. But below are the basic
suggestions.... (errr ... remember I'm new to IR as well so I can only
suggest what seems to work for me)

The basic idea is not to handle the film when developing it as the heat and
oil from your hands can effect the film. Also be sure to load the film onto
the spools in a truly IR safe location.

Also try not to use the smallest acceptable fstop when shooting as IR light
is very long wave and won't record correctly if stopped down to small.
(Email the list for a more technical explanation of this...)

Meter with a red filter in place on the lens (#25) so the light meter will
correctly read the amount of IR light. I find shooting with 3 bracketed
settings seems to work well (i.e. the suggested setting, one shutter speed
faster, two shutter speeds faster). I don't fudge the fstop do to changes
is depth of field when this is done.

Also keep good notes as to the fstop and shutter speeds you used so you can
compare the settings used with properly exposed shots. Basically you'll
develop a feel for the correct settings for a good exposure with some
practice and your notes.

As far as developing visit George's page for more info....

Good Luck

David, you wrote:

Apparently there are some additional hazards in the development of Kodak
IR as pointed out by George Smyth (thanks!).....

Hi David-

I just joined the IR list yesterday, and am about to develop my first
roll of Kodak HIE film. I would REALLY appreciate it if you could e-mail
me a copy of whatever info George Smyth sent you about the "hazards"!

I run into enough hazards on my own.... avoiding a few would really be a
refreshing change.

Thanks in advance,

Brian
