I imagine he's referring to buying bulk spools of film, 100 or
150 feet, and rolling it himself.  I do that with HIE, which
comes in 150 foot spools -- thanks to the thinner base, 150 feet
fits on the same spool as 100 feet of standard film, so it fits
my bulk loader fine.  Just have to practice taping it on the
spools and cutting the leaders in the dark.  150 feet makes 30+
rolls of 36 exposures.  The last spool of HIE I got was expired
but cold stored so it's still in perfect shape, around $60, or $2
per 36 exposure roll.
