Just put an opaque IR filter over an incandescent lamp. If I
remember correctly, WJ's forsale page lists filters for
Maglite-style flashlights (or "torches" on that side of the
pond, right?). Also, American Science & Surplus has a nice deal
on military surplus ~7" diameter domed glass filters somewhere
in the vicinity of 87C -- no data available, but they're dark
enough a bright flashgun doesn't make a visible glow, but the IR
remote for my television still works perfectly. They're just
about the right diameter to mount over an old-fashioned round
car headlight. See www.sciplus.com for more info.
