I would suggest picking up a roll of a fine grained film, such as Gold 100 or
Tmax 100 or Fuji Reala.  Shoot a roll with the lens wide open at both the
short and tele end of the zoom.  Shoot something like a brick wall or
newspaper.  Do the same thing at F8.  Compare the results with the same test
of other lenses you have.  Keep in mind that the lens that the printer is
using may effect the results.  If you have access to a high powered loupe,
then you can do the same thing with slide film.
