It is certainly my opinion that the 'spots' are not caused by the
processing. I use a reasonable amount of 5x4 film and have 'spots' on some
negs and not on others when they are processed together. Processing is
X-tol (previously ID-11 and D-76), water, fix then wash. It is very rare
that I get any spots on the film, say 2-4 sheets a year when I am shooting
about 250 and have only seen them once or twice on 35mm.
It remains my opinion that it is something in the manufacturing or storage
of the film that creates them. The next time I get any I will be looking at
them under a microscope to see the effect on the film surface in more
detail. If any on has any examples they could send me I would welcome them.
