I don't know if my bulk loader is really IR-safe or not, even
though I've loaded plenty of HIE with it.  I've never felt the
need to check, since all the most frustrating parts of the
process have to be done in total darkness anyway -- taping the
film to the spool, reassembling the cartridge, cutting off
the roll, and cutting the leader.  All those involve having the
loader open anyway, and if I'm going to do all that in the dark,
I can certainly turn the crank and count frames in the dark, too.

By the time you've rolled up 150 feet of HIE in total darkness,
your eyes will be so well adapted to the dark that you can see
tiny light sources you'd never notice after just half an hour in
the dark -- I've found my Gralab timer is so bright that after an
hour I can pour a fresh martini on the far side of the darkroom
without spilling :-)
