No, not your exeperience, just the way IR light works! Shady areas tend to
reflect very little IR radiation and usually turn out dark, or thin on your
negative. Other areas tend to reflect immense amounts of IR and will
increase local density no matter what you do. Keep bracketing by at least
one full stop on either side of your metered reading. You should have a good
range of negatives from which to choose. 

As for your Nikon N60, it sounds like a glorified point and shoot camera! I
can't believe the cheap stuff Nikon and other camera manufacturers put out
these days! You found the proper solution: buy used. If enough of us do that
the manufacturers may start to ammend some fo the foolish design decisions
they've made recently. This seems to be particularly true for those of us
who shoot IR or slow speed films like AGFAPAN 25 and KODACHROME 25.
