IR and night photography

I was thinking of doing night photography with color infrared film, but
can't find any references on techniques. I was hoping to basically shoot
the sky while there's a new moon, and get vibrant colors from the various
star patterns. Does this work? Are there known exposure and aperture
values I should use? How about long exposures by the minutes or hours for
star trails? what about vegetation exposure in these scenes?
