Hi Sherry: You have it a bit backwards. Colour negative film has a range of
7 to 9 stops, depending on the film. Slide films are limited to 5 or 6
stops. Yes, you can apply the Zone system to colour materials, and like B&W,
you are best advised to meter the highlights (heresy, I realize, but true)
and set your exposure accordingly. I meter The brightest area I want detail
in, and call it Zone VIII for neg film, and Zone VII if I am shooting slide
film. Got the idea from Fred Picker in one of the Zone VI newsletters he
wrote prior to retiring. Best metering method I have found to date. I rarely
bother metering shadows anymore.
