Zone System and Color Transparancy Films

I realize that this question is not specifically related to infared
photography, but as a photograpy student it is of interest to me. I
was wondering if the zone system can be applied to color transparancy
films. Unlike negative films which only have a range of around 5
stops, I realize chrome films have a much wider range. Also unlike
negative films in which you meter for the shadows and develop for the
highlights, I understand you would meter for the highlights when using
a transparancy film. Would it therefore be possible to take a
reflected reading off the highlights and overexpose by a certain number
of stops for zone placement? If so how many what is the range of
transparancy films? On average how many stops overexposure would it
take to get from a reflected meter reading to the highlight?

Thanks,
Sherri
