I would agree with george's statement only to the extent that it applies
to color neg where you will get cross over problems with a pull.  

The color doesn't shift much on the latest ektachromes. Pushes and pulls
are done regularly to control the contrast in transparency film without
having to worry about
color shift. Now, however, some films like E200 don't gain much contrast
even 
when pushed 2 stops.
