Note that the stuff used by fire-fighters are *thermal* infrared
cameras. Those are now in the US$15k price range, instead of the
US$25-50k with complex external cooling of the old days....although one still
can buy tripod mounted high-resolution (0.1C) cameras of US$125k and
up.
Btw, even in the old days they used IR to improve vision this way: one of
my books mentions the use of IR-plates on board of ships, to see
through fog. I am still puzzled by that remark, as the time between
exposure and final print, or distance travelled, seems quite impractical....8-))
