I use Toyo cut film holders (with either 5 or 7 notches) for our IR work and
pull the darkslide cover out all the way, turn round then replace (far
enough to hold but not cover the film surface) before making the exposure.
Never had any problems with fogging, though these are done in a studio,
though not dark very little IR light about I guess.

As for the film scratching, I have never come across this either.  I must
confess that I seem to be very lucky when it comes to 5x4 IR work as I never
suffered from any of the problems that have been reported here, I guess I
must be doing something right.
I do however process all the film in a old 3 gallon Kodak tank and cradle on
hangers so this might indicate the scratching is due to processing?  As I
go through about 8-10 boxes a year I would of expected some faults to appear
if it's a common problem or is it just in the USA?
