Are you inspired to try by looking at Man Ray's work? He achieved his tonal
values by hitting the negatives with a shot of light... not the prints. I
believe the story if his "discovery" was someone turning on the darkroom
lights for a moment by accident. Probably one of those dingy models ;)
I tried with prints and the best results I got (which weren't great) was by
using an old Nikon flash that could be set manually at 1/16 or 1/32 and
then had a 2x neutral density filter added. You also have to make sure to
maintain a consistent height.
The point during development that you add light is significant. I seem to
recall that the condition of the developer was important too and it was
best to have one that was used but not exhausted. In Man Ray's case, given
the time that he made them, the developer was probably kept in tanks and
given a shot of replenisher based on square inches of film developed.
I also had to give a quick bath in farmer's reducer for my best results.
Mucho work,
pete
