When using an opaque filter, I meter through a #25 filter.  Then I add the
appropriate number of stops, switch to the opaque filter, and shoot.

Your meter, though it will read infrared radiation, is not calibrated for
it, so metering through an opaque filter will give you unpredictable
results.
