Pull-processing HIE & Using IR Flashbulbs

After poring over contacts of my latest HIE shots, I'm getting a little
dissatisfied with its grainy character. The obvious option is to give 750
a try, but I'm also curious as to whether HIE would benefit from pulling it
a stop. Anyone done this? I guess it seems a little nutty to muck with
pulling/pushing a film for which it is such a crapshoot to calculate
exposures. Still, do you get much less grain if you pull HIE a stop?
Another nutty quest, while I'm posting: I just inherited a Speed Graphic
kit, complete with Luke Skywalker flashbulb attachment. Any tips on
shooting HIE with IR flashbulbs? I was thinking of shooting crowd scenes
at punk shows, using IR film/IR flash as a way to catch the action without
dazzling people with flashbursts. How well does IR flash bounce? I
imagine that an IR bulb fired at 45 degrees is pretty stealthy, but do you
get any usable light out of it?
I also inherited a Nikon S2, and I'm looking forward to using it as my
IR-dedicated body eventually, since it's a rangefinder. Anyone have
experience with shooting HIE with Nikon rangefinders? Do the bodies leak
IR?
Last, a note from the field: I just got back from a vacation on Lake
Winnipeg. After days of staring at the magnificent cloudscapes rolling
over the prarie, I figured it was worth trucking down to Winnipeg for IR
film to shoot landscapes. Winnipeg isn't much of a metropolis, but not
only did the local pro shop have HIE and 750, they had 750 in 120!
