Virtual B&W IR images?

The latest Outdoor Photographer magazine has a interesting cover photo. It
starts as typical color landscape then graduates into what appears to be
IR. See for yourself:

The title of the corresponding article is "B&W Infrared from Color Photos"
by Daryl Benson. He explains his discouraging results with real B&W IR film
led him to develop a digital technique that emulates the look of IR prints.

The printed examples (most shown as before and after shots) are fairly
convincing with dark skies, white clouds, and "glowing" foliage.
