Darryl lazy? Not a chance!
I have met Darryl and listened and watched with great interest to some of
his presentations.
A bit of background on Darryl (as best as I know it)--he was a mailman in
Edmonton (Alberta, Canada) and a very good amateur photographer. He quit
his job about 8-10 years ago to go into photography full time. I see his
work published regularly, and I am always amazed and impressed with it.
His work can also be seen in stock catalogs. And there's enough of them
there to assume he does very well with it.
He has always been ahead of his time with regard to experimentation and
trying new and different things. He has expanded beyond the boundaries of
mere film to produce images that are nothing short of incredible.
I remember one of his published images several years ago that showed a
remote log cabin in the midst of a considerable amount of snow amidst pine
trees. There was no electricity or plumbing to the cabin, yet it had this
beautiful warm glow from the inside. Darryl had back-packed a generator
and lights through hip-deep snow for several km so that he could get the
effect he wanted.
I don't think that implies laziness. And to arbitrarily attribute that to
him is picayune in the extreme. We all know people who have a "gift" of
some sort enabling them to do some things better and more efficiently than
the rest of us. So to empirically and quantitatively state that "It takes
a weekend" and "a few rolls" to "place your vision on film" is nothing
short of egocentric!
And no, I'm not a close friend of Darryl; I wish I were. I could learn
much from him.
