I cut the corners off of the end that I am feeding into the
Patterson reel. I seems to have lessened this problem.
Another technique I have not tried with 35mm film, but use for
rolling 120 film, is to fold over about 1 cm of the end. Then press the
fold (with a dull part of the scissors - the outside of a blade, or the
finger holes) to make it as flat as possible. Finally, if you folded it
unevenly, you will have to cut off the stray edge that you can feel.
It sounds complicated, but it is simple, and it gives you a hard
edge that you can pull through the reel at the beginning, and force to
advance if it binds up towards the end, without worrying about making it
jump the tracks. It has made rolling 120 film a breeze, and that was the
trickiest and most time-consuming thing about developing 120 roll film
before. It used to always jump off of the tracks, but now it stays on.
