John,

Most of the consumer level digital cameras do not have infrared blocking
filters over the ccd so they can be used for digital infrared imaging
(unlike the top of the line pro cameras that do have ir blocking filters). 
One way to determine if your camera's ccd is infrared sensitive is with an
infrared remote control from a TV set.  Turn on your camera and point the
remote towards the lens, push any of the buttons, and see if you can detect
the infrared beam from the remote on your camera's LCD.  If you can then you
can probably shoot IR images with the appropriate filter (#87, 87c, or even
a red #25).  You could also just go to a camera store that has IR filters
and try them on your camera (be sure there is plenty of bright sunlight for
the test).
