Les,
I'm also amazed by the IR performance of these consumer grade digital
cameras. I have used both greyscale and color modes with the Nikon 950, but
haven't seen much difference in the results. Curious that the Nikon saves
the greyscale mode image files in RGB format. I don't think that there is a
filter over the ccd, but I'll check with Nikon tech support. I can boost
the speed somewhat by changing the default iso 80 up to 320 iso, but
sacrifice quality by introducing noise. I've made some fairly decent 6x8
and even 8x10 greyscale prints using the Epson 750 photo printer and could
get a better tonal scale with the new MIS or Lysonic quadtone inks designed
for this type of printing. I certainly couldn't get anything larger without
resampling the image and definitely not the quality you are getting with
your equipment.
