I haven't used an actual gelatine filter on a flash, but before I
got an IR head for my Sunpak strobe, I used a Lee polyester 87
taped over my Olympus T-32 flash. It never caught on fire or
melted, but if I took several shots in rapid succesion it would
get warm to the touch and start to deform. When I stopped using
it, it had developed a crinkled area in the center of the foil,
in line with the flash tube, but was still working quite well.
