120 Konica
Hi All
Before I start this let me point out that I am not trying to start a Konica
vs Kodak 'war'... it's just a comment. I found this list largely through
following links from my site's statistics (referring URLs) and discovered
that a number of people have linked to my photography section (which is
nice), in particular the infrared page. A number of people have also noted
alongside the link that I don't like Kodak IR, but because I have nice pics
they don't hold that against me ;-)
This of course is true (I actually say it on one of the pages) but it is
just a personal preference. I still suggest people try HIE out for
themselves when they ask me... while the quote is technically true it is
perhaps a little out of context.
So now I'd just like to set the record straight.... What I like about
Konica IR is it's relatively fine grain and exceptional tonal range. (which
is why I also like Kodak TechPan) When I test a film (any BW film, not just
IR) I take the resulting images and run them through some extreme contrast
adjustments (digitally) to see how well the highlight and shadow details
hold up. I've added a page on IR image quality to my site with the results
of one such test on a print from a 6X12 Konica 750 negative.

To date, I have not come anywhere near this with Kodak IR. I either got
clogged highlights with golf ball grain or grey mush from underdevelopment.
If anyone can produce similar results to this test with Kodak IR then I'll
certainly rush out and buy some to do some more tests (provided you tell me
how you processed it) but until then I'll stick to what I know (I have yet
to even test proper IR filters on Konica... must do that one day)
... oh and I'm not talking a one off image here either... no push pull
processing required, 98% prints don't require dodging or burning. Of all
the IR shots on my site only 2 have had dodging/burning done on them.
Cheers
Ben
